Green Schools Update

We started first by locating all committee members and assigning all the necessary executive positions eg. Secretary, Chairperson etc. Then we started research on our issues around the school. The main issue raised was the amount of litter and lack of recycling. We located our school blackspots as the sixth year area (outside room 15), gym and the 2nd year area( outside the woodwork room). Also the outdoor areas around the gym and walkway are the more obvious blackspots. When we were done we then decided to focus on the recycling aspect of the project so we first brought bins for each classroom. We made sure the bins were clear as then we would be able to check if anything non-recyclable were placed in by mistake. We also had bins fitted on the school walls in certain areas outside. These bins are now collected and emptied regularly. In the first few weeks of this method we weighed the bags, one day a few months later we weighed them again to compare our progress. We also have a big litter clean up twice a month which involves all committee members. This has proven a success because the litter seems to have been reduced substantially everytime we do the clean up. We had a guest speaker in earlier in the year in order to help us start up our project. We also went on a trip to Maynooth Secondary School to ask then how they got their first green flag and if they had any tips. This was very beneficial. At the moment we are currently focusing on informing our school about recycling. We have recently bought new bags for recycling that tells students what to put in each bin, on the bags.
