Meeting with Minister for Education Norma Foley TD regarding Waiting Lists/Oversubscription for 1st year August 2023

8th Feb 2023

Principal of St. Farnan's PPS, Andrew Purcell and five other local second level school Principals, met with the Minister for Education Norma Foley on Tuesday 7th February to discuss the serious issue of waiting lists and oversubscritption in our schools with the huge number of Incoming 1st year students starting this August 2023.

We would like to thank James Lawless TD who organised the meeting with Cllr Paul Ward and all other North Kildare TDs, Bernard Durkin TD, Réada Cronin TD and Catherine Murphy TD who also contributed to this meeting with senior officials from the Department of Education and Skills (DES) and the Minister.

KWETB Head of Schools, Ken Scully, who has overseen the magnificent new school buildings in Maynooth CC, Maynooth PPS and Naas CC was also on the call and Ken and KWETB Chief Executive, Dr Deirdre Keyes, who are hugely supportive of our new devolved build project for 1000 pupils in Prosperous are also assisting us with our Additional School Accommodation application to the DES so that we can provide a great education for all our students in St. Farnan's over the coming years until we move into our new building, hopefully in 4 years.

The Department stated that every 6th class child will have a school space come the beginning of the next school year and that there is a framework in place and support mechanisms to meet this urgent crisis. The Minister understands how stressful and difficult this time is for students on waiting lists, their parents/guardians and on schools and is determined to get this situation sorted with the DES within the coming weeks.

More updates to follow.
