Official Launch of TY Photographic Exhibition

8th Oct 2019

On Monday, October 7th, students from the TY class of 2019 and their families and friends, joined with the management and staff of St. Farnan's to celebrate the official launch of the "In Transition" photographic exhibition in the Riverbank Arts Centre in Newbridge.

This is the first time the school has held an exhibition in a public gallery and we very much hope that this valuable collaboration will continue with many other projects planned for the future.

The exhibition contains images created by students in last year's TY class in the Photography model they undertook with Ms. Richardson.

Their work took its starting point from the work of iconic photographers including Michael Kenna, Steve Mc Curry and Eliot Porter. Students conducted research and were encouraged to be inspired and influenced by these photographic styles and/or themes, techniques and imagery. Students responded by creating their own photographs, echoing and interpreting these major photographers, using only their mobile phone.

The main aim when delivering this new photography course to the transition year students was to encourage and facilitate students awareness, appreciation and interpretation of the world around them, their social environment, the human race and themselves. Students developed their photography skills alongside personal, social and analytical abilities through a series of projects. Projects were structured for students to succeed, yet flexible enough to allow personal freedom of interpretation. This exhibition is a result of their learning, research and creativity.

The audience was welcomed by Linda Geraghty, Venue Director, the Principal, Mr. Collins and Eoghan Kenna, 5th year, who spoke on behalf of the students.

We were delighted to also welcome Mr. Brendan Weld, Chairperson of the school's Board of Management, and Councillor Aidan Farrell, among our guests.

The exhibition runs in the McKenna Gallery in the Riverbank Arts Centre until October 19th - please do pop in to see it if you are in Newbridge!
