PE Subject Inspection Term 2 2026
Following the recent Subject Inspection for Physical Education (PE) in February 2026, we are pleased overall with the positive findings outlined in the report and especially with the inclusive and supportive learning environment and positive relationships that the Inspector found and felt throughout our school.
The report highlighted and commended many aspects teaching and learning, of whole-school support provision and promotion of PE, especially the new Leaving Certificate PE examinable subject and acknowledged good planning and preparation throughout the department. The inspection report included a number of recommendations which we are committed to addressing into the next academic year:
- At senior cycle, not all 5th and 6th year students were timetabled for PE. This will be amended in next year’s timetable to ensure that all senior cycle students receive timetabled PE lessons. Consequentially, this will have a knock on consequence on Leaving Cert exam subject class time. We have taken on board many ideas for Senior Cycle non-exam PE that the Inspector mentioned.
- During junior cycle PE lessons, the Inspector noted that there was some insufficient adaptation and differentiation of activities. We will continue to work closely with the PE department to ensure that differentiation strategies are consistently applied across all classes, including our 4 inclusive special classes (ASD & MLU).
- A review of 5th and 6th year LCPE copybooks showed evidence of some monitoring of student work, and the Inspector recommended more progressive written formative feedback. We will support LCPE teachers in further developing formative feedback practices to enhance student learning and progression.
- The Inspector also recommended consideration of a short-throw projector to support teaching and learning in the gym. We are pleased to confirm that a short-throw projector will be purchased and installed in the gym to further enhance the teaching and learning experience for all students.
- We will attempt to timetable single base class Junior Cycle PE lessons in our gym and not have a situation whereby some junior cycle classes doubled up for PE classes in our gym.
We welcome the findings of the PE Inspection, thank the Inspector who engaged very positively in school and remain committed to continuously improving the quality of Physical Education and student learning experiences within St. Farnan’s Post Primary School.
