Science Week Events

13th Nov 2022

We have organised a number of competitions and activities to celebrate Science Week which starts on Monday, November 14th.

This year we are hoping to run two school wide competitions for everybody.

The first one is a video competition where students will be required to design an experiment related to the exploding lunch bag experiment which you will see at the following link:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u0HLuZM_wTE

Please see below a document which gives some background to the experiment and a simple method to follow. At the end of the document, there are 3 questions, one of which you will use to develop a hypothesis and experiment which you will record and send in to the following email address -    explodinglunchbag@stfarnans.ie

The deadline for entries for this challenge is 8pm on the 17/11/2022. Videos will be judged on best use of scientific method and on the uniqueness of their experiment design.

Our second Science Week challenge is to make a model car powered by an elastic band. There is a document below with a list of suggested pieces and a suggested instruction manual for the design of the car.  The aim will be that students will design their own car, powered by an elastic band and then we will have a number of races next Friday to get year group winners. Then we will have a champions race to see whose car will travel the greatest distance.

As mentioned, you can download a suggested design process but we are happy to allow any and all modifications you wish to use in order to increase the distance your car will travel. The only exceptions are the use of any electronic or rocket propulsion.

The deadline for entries will be 9am, Friday November 18th. Entries must be brought to Mr. Furey in Room 8 before 9am.

Again there will be prizes for the winners of the competitions. Best of luck to all who plan to enter. If you have any questions about either this competition or the exploding lunch bag competition please contact Mr. Furey either by email or see him in Room 8 over the coming days.
